A Cherokee Village resident passed away following complications from being stung by multiple yellow jackets Aug. 16.

According to a release from Cherokee Village Police Chief Monte Lane, his department was made aware of a death that was in relation to an earlier medical call just after 11 a.m.

“According to information from witnesses and 911 records, Sharp County Dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 0952 hrs on the 16th reporting a male subject that had been stung by yellow jackets and was having medical complications,” the release said. “Spring River ambulance and Cherokee Village Fire Department personnel responded to the call. First responders found the subject lying face down on the ground unresponsive upon arrival. CPR was started and the subject was administered a dose of epinephrine by Spring River Paramedics.” 

The man was transported by ambulance to an area medical facility for treatment where he was pronounced dead.

“At the time of this press release there has been no specific determination of cause of death. As the subject had numerous medical issues including diabetes and high blood pressure it is believed that a conglomeration of medical issues caused by the catalyst of the bee stings may be responsible,” the release said. “Witnesses/Family members stated they did not know if the victim was allergic to bee stings, but they were able to advise officer of several medical conditions of the victim.”

An investigation of the incident and the scene did not reveal any evidence that the death was caused by anything other than medical/natural causes.

The name of the man has not been released.

It is believed the man was stung multiple times after a swarm of yellow jackets came from underneath the man’s porch.
