The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman

The young adult trilogy, His Dark Materials, by Philip Pullman, has captured my interest.  While I am certainly not a young adult, I am a fantasy fan and enjoy using my imagination while reading.  I am a big fan of Harry Potter.

The Harry Potter stories are pure fantasy, magic at the wave of a wand and poor muggles who have no idea what is going on.  His Dark Materials, meanwhile, while still fantasy, uses aspects of modern physics such as dark matter and multiple worlds that have been described as possibllities in science journals.  The Subtle Knife has plenty of fantasy, including flying witches and windows to other dimensions, but you can read it while extapolating from the world we live in.

In this second book, Lyra, the heroine, and reader of the alethiometer, a truth telling machine, meets Will, the bearer of the subtle knife, which can cut any material and windows between worlds.  They are hunted by the evil Mrs. Coulter and the Authorities across dimensions and worlds.  It took a few chapters to get going but then I couldn’t put it down.  I’m looking forward to the final book in the series,  The Amber Spyglass.
