Book Review by T. E. Hill

Magic has always fascinated me. When reality becomes too real, if you know what I mean, I imagine being able to snap my fingers and make things happen. Since I’m unlikely to be able to do that anytime soon, reading about Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden, the Wizard of Chicago, is the next best thing. He is always getting himself into trouble, fighting monsters, defending the weak, and convincing the powers that be that he is doing the right thing using his magic.

Why two books, you ask? Well, this episode is really split into these two parts, Peace Talks, where all the relatively good guys try to put together some kind of agreement where they aren’t fighting each other all the time, and Battle Ground, where they band together to fight the really bad guys who are attacking Chicago.

Butcher uses every possible magical creature you can imagine, from Norse and Greek gods to vampires and werewolves, for Harry to deal with. Mythology, religion, and monsters are mixed together until it sometimes becomes hard to remember who is who. But, the battles are large, loud, and exciting, and the good guys finally prevail, even though you begin to wonder for a while. If you enjoy the current trend in super hero books and movies, give Harry a try, I think you’ll like him.
