Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024 is now in the history books as the hottest day recorded for the month of February, beating a centuries old record.
According to Jeff Hood with the National Weather Service (NWS), after searching through the NWS database, it was determined there was a new record high temperature.
“With high temperatures topping out in the mid to upper 80s across the area. That shattered numerous daily high temperature records in some cases by 10 to 15 degrees and in a few spots locally it was the warmest day in February since records were kept for some locations,” Hood said. “For the area surrounding Hardy we have weather statistics going back to 1897 with some brief interruptions where records weren’t maintained, but from that point to 2024 we have a good indication of what temperatures have done.”
The high reached 88 degrees, surpassing record high temperatures both for the NWS’s closes climate center and as the hottest day in February on record.
“Going back though what we do have available, the previous daily high temperature record as far as the warmest day in February ever recorded in that area occurred Feb. 24, 1918 and that high temperature was 87 degrees, so the observed high temperature of Feb. 27, 2024 not only breaks a daytime high temperature record but is now the hottest daily temperature ever recorded in February in the Hardy area.”
