Although we are attempting to return to normal following our experience with the Covid-19 virus; there are variants of the virus that are causing further infections. It is important that all of us become vaccinated in order to combat this issue effectively. Not only does it protect you but will deter the spread of the disease. I don’t think any of us wishes to return to the life style we had in 2020.

Recycling is instrumental for our city but in order to make it work we need volunteers to assist with our recycling efforts.  As you know, items are dropped off for recycling every Wednesday during the twelve months of the year unless there is inclement weather.  The organizations who demonstrate civic pride by working a month for our recycling effort are much appreciated.  However, we are in need of additional help in 2022.  One of our volunteer groups has dropped out and we need a replacement for the month of April.  If your organization is interested in filling this slot, please contact City Hall.

At the June City Council meeting Chief of Police, Rickey Crook was recognized for his service in law enforcement and for being the city’s police chief from 2009-2021.  His successor will be Sgt. Monte Lane, who will be promoted to chief as of July 1st.  Also, at that meeting the council had the first reading of a proposed vehicle ordinance.  You may view this ordinance on the city web site by clicking on the June meeting agenda.

As our Independence Day weekend will be here shortly we want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable July 4th.  Our Fire Department will be hosting their annual pancake breakfast on Saturday, July 3rd from 6:30-noon.  On Sunday the 4th the boat parade and fireworks display; beginning at dark which are sponsored by the A&P Commission will occur on Lake Thunderbird.  If you plan to set off fireworks on your property, please review and observe the rules on the City Facebook page about discharging fireworks in the city.

However you plan to celebrate the weekend do it in a safe manner. Don’t engage in activities that could bring harm to property, yourself or others. And let us remember what the Spirit of 1776 means to all Americans. Have a Happy 4th of July!
