Each year, Shelter Insurance Companies holds a contest called “Thankful for Our Communities.” Five winners each receive a $5,000 grant for the charity of their choice.

This year, Jeremy Isaacs created a winning video about Highland and chose Friendship Baptist Church to be the recipient of the $5,000 award. The check will be presented on September 29th, 2021, at Friendship Baptist Church in Highland, Ark.

The rules of the contest required entrants to write an essay or create a video about what makes their communities special. The entry that earned the most votes was an automatic winner, and the next nine entries with the most votes were submitted to a panel of Shelter judges, who chose the next four winners.

Shelter has always encouraged community involvement, and this contest gives people an opportunity to explain what makes their communities stand out. According to Frank Thompson, Vice President of Marketing for Shelter, “We chose this approach because we wanted to point out the many positive aspects to the communities we serve and honor the people who can make a difference in those areas. We also wanted to find out what’s important to the citizens in these communities and help support those causes. This contest was a fun way to do that.”

Isaac’s video, titled 8 Hours in Highland, describes how the town’s citizens come together in the midst of crisis and how resilient the town is. He said in 2008 they watched for eight hours as a tornado barreled towards the town and ended its long trek through the state in Highland. He also talks about another night where the town experienced an 8-hour ice storm crippled the town. They even came together to build a house for a resident in less than eight hours. Regarding the house, he said, “We all joined into what a community should be—a friend.

Isaac’s added, “In Highland, being a neighbor is a sacred thing. We have been through so much together, we know that when one has a need, we all have a need.” He also says, “We are all different, but we have the same common interest—helping our neighbor, helping each other.”
