The first of many charges to come have been filed against 38-year-old Charles Dean Martin, the man who abducted a child in Mammoth Spring before leading police on a high-speed chase which resulted in a more than 30-minute standoff involving a firearm Aug. 19.
On Aug. 22, charges of interfering with child custody and battery in the third degree were filed against Martin in Fulton County where the initial incident occurred leading to the series of bizarre circumstances.
According to the Affidavit for Probable Cause for Arrest, on Aug. 19 just after 9:45 a.m., Martin took the baby from his ex-girlfriend and ran from the restaurant the two had agreed to meet at.
Prior to exiting the building, Martin ran into the lobby where he assaulted the woman’s father, shoving him down and hitting him multiple times in the head with his fist.
He then ran to his truck and began to flee to Hardy where he was stopped.
While stopped, Deputy Bryce Trivitt grabbed the baby to return it to its mother.
After being taken into custody by authorities in Sharp County following the standoff in Ozark Acres, Mammoth Spring Police Jamie Turnbough and his assistant chief traveled to the Sharp County Sheriff’s Office to speak to Martin.
Martin stated he had set up a meeting with his ex-girlfriend to return her belongings and Mammoth Spring was the halfway point. He stated he grabbed the baby and his ex-girlfriend’s father attempted to stop him, so he shoved the man to the ground.
He stated there was not a custody agreement and he “thought he was okay”.
He also stated he was stopped at Hardy and after an officer took the baby, he “snapped and fled”.
As a result, in Fulton County, Martin faces charges of interference with custody, a class C felony and battery in the third degree.
Bond in Fulton County was set at $1,000.
Pending charges in Sharp County include aggravated assault, criminal mischief in the first degree, possession of firearm by certain persons and felony fleeing.
