You might remember the Bald Avenger (Kurt Holloway) and Captain Iceberg (Doug Driesel) when late last year, the duo took a dive into the icy waters of Lake Thunderbird in Cherokee Village to raise money for a local resident who was battling cancer.

On Feb. 28, the do gooders will return to the frigid waters to once again take the plunge, this time, not just to help one individual, to help their community and church.

“The last time we did this, we did it for Kim Strano, because she was really battling cancer and she ultimately has won that battle,” Driesel said. “Now, we’re going back to help raise money to get the HVAC repaired at the Cherokee Village United Methodist Church (CVUMC).”

Although both Holloway and Driesel attend CVUMC, that is not the only reason the pair said they’re willing to take the plunge.

“CVUMC does a lot for the community and some things people may not be aware of. For the last two years for example, we have opened an emergency warning shelter that was open 24/7, we fed people, they slept there, we fellowshipped. When temperatures became deadly cold, we opened our doors and people came. We picked them up to get them there if needed. It’s hard to do that if you can’t heat the building,” Driesel said. “We do meals twice a week for anyone who needs them, they hold Celebrate Recovery there for anyone who has a struggle of any kind. It’s not just about alcohol or drug addiction, it could be anxiety that brings them. The point is, we’re here to serve, and we’re just getting started.”

Driesel said donations are welcome to help the church continue its mission to serve the community and the community is invited to Lake Thunderbird, Feb. 28 at noon to watch Captain Iceberg and the Bald Avenger, take the plunge.
