The Friends of Ash Flat Library are happy to announce another Sharp County Master Gardener presentation All Things Tomatoes, slated for May 18 at 10 a.m. in the Ash Flat Library Conference Room.
According to Anita Hawkins, who will be presenting the program, those who come will learn some time saving tips on how to get best results from their tomato plants.
“A couple of the things I will be talking about, probably the most important will be the wicking system. So many of us have rocks and clay in our yards and we can’t grow in the ground, so I’m bringing the material to show everyone how to make a wicking system with a 25 inch planter,” Hawkins said.
Hawkins said the wicking system holds five gallons of water and helps plants steadily get the water they need.

“In those planters you’re having to water once or twice a day, especially in the summer. But this system is awesome, I used it all last summer with all of my vegetables but in particular the tomato plants came out fabulous. So much better than when I was watering every day,” Hawkins said.
Another topic which will be discussed is how to save and preserve seeds from plants for next year.
Other items to be discussed will include: determinant or indeterminate, hybrid or heirloom, cross pollination prevention and more.
Hawkins said although the focus is on tomatoes, the information presented will be helpful for most vegetable plants.
The community is invited and encouraged to attend.
