Voters took to the polls Feb. 14 to cast their ballot for or against the proposed 8.9 mill increase for the Highland School District, however, voters made it clear they didn’t love the idea of an increase as early totals rolled in setting the stage for the evening.

For the district which includes Sharp County and a portion of Fulton County, 1,520 early and absentee ballots were cast.

There were 417 votes in favor of the increase and 1,101 against.

As results continued to roll in, the final numbers were: 693 for and 1,602 against.

This is the second time in less than six months the proposed millage increase has been rejected by voters.
