Cherokee Village Police Chief Monte Lane confirmed two people were injured during the annual Thunder on Thunderbird in Cherokee Village July 4, after it appeared a misfire occurred during the fireworks display causing additional fireworks to prematurely discharge.

A portion of the Lake Thunderbird dam was evacuated to allow firefighters to extinguish the flames.

According to Fire Chief Kal Dienst, faulty fireworks are to blame for the initial unit failure which caused two additional units to fail.

One Cherokee Village Firefighter was in close proximity extinguishing small embers and fires as well as one professional shooter when the incident occurred.

Both were struck. Dienst stated no major injuries occurred and both individuals were checked out by EMS. Dienst extended his thanks to those on scene for their commitment to the job and their handling of what he called a very real accident that was mitigated safely and effectively.
