The Highland School District will begin their 2021-2022 school year beginning Aug. 16 and Highland Police Chief Shane Russell would like to issue a reminder to citizens to be vigilant and cautious when in the school zone and near busses.

“It has been a strange year with many changes, but one thing that won’t change is the need to observe the speed limit in the school zone,” Russell said. “We’ve had a few months with no school, but when it starts back, we will be strictly enforcing the speed limit in the school zone. There is always an adjustment period, but we want to remind everyone ahead of time. We will enforce the speed limit in the school zone not only to keep our kids safe, but for the safety of the public as well.”

Each morning from 7:15 a.m. until 8:15 a.m., and again from 3 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. there will be a reduced speed limit. The speed limit is typically 45 m.p.h. through Highland, but it is reduced to 25 during the previously mentioned time frames.

Russell also said he would like to reinforce proper etiquette with regards to school busses especially when they are stopped with lights flashing.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s on the four lane, a two lane or a dirt road, if they have their lights on there are children near,” Russell said. “We want to have a good and safe school year and everyone can help to make sure our kids get to and from school safely.”

The reduced speed limit starts near The Highland School Based Health Clinic and runs to the Red Mule.

During reduced speed times, the limit is 25 m.p.h.
