To learn more about this beautiful state that we live in, the Spring River Gem & Mineral Club in Cherokee Village will continue the “Only In Arkansas” series begun in 2023. In 2024, five meetings will have presentations devoted to Arkansas.
All meetings are 10AM on the first Friday of the month, at Thunderbird Center in Cherokee Village, AR. There is no formal meeting in June and December, as the club picnic is in June, and the Christmas party in December.
March 1, David Thomas, PhD., NASA Solar Space Ambassador, will present “The Great American Eclipse, April 8, 2024.” Why is this special? Thomas will prepare us and give us the knowledge to get the most appreciation and enjoyment ofthis great solar event: also of lunar eclipses.
April 5 brings Julie Morrow, PhD., who is doing ongoing research, conducting excavations, on a privately owned late Mississippian town on the White River, Greenbrier. The late Mississippian archeological period was 1400- 1520. Who lived at Greenbrier? What were those people like? Their family life, subsistence, culture????
May 3 will present “ Earthquakes in Arkansas” by Randall Cox, PhD. In the last 365 days, Arkansas experienced 299 earthquakes. Hmmm. We ought to know more about this.
August 2 : Freda Cruse Hardison, PhD. , considered one of the Ozarks most distinguished folk historians, also prolific author, will take us back in time to “The Birth of the Ozarks.” Where did the early settlers come from? I picture them workingthe ground; also the Indians, embarking on theTrail of Tears; ; and if Granny has time she’ll be sitting on the porch telling the young’uns stories.
October 4: Mike Hanley, Phd., CEO of Terra-Intel, one its founding partners, and Head of Exploration, will tell us about his exploration of the “largest deposit of Rare Earth in the world” in Arkansas. Who would have thought, huh? Evidently, Hanley did.

September 6: Laura Ruhl-Whittle PhD. “Medical Geology.” How do geological earth processes affect human health? How is your health? Learn What, How and Why rocks, soils, dust and volcanic emissions, etc, can harm or benefit your health.
November 1: SRGMC members Warren and LabertaStout have visited 38 countries. . They will present “Touring the World, Finding Rocks.” Now that sounds like fun!
