At one point or another just about everyone has entertained the idea of winning the lottery and what they might do with their winnings should the opportunity come. Although, it also requires participating in the lottery to make it happen.

For one Sharp County resident, Susan Jett, although she has not won the lottery, she has entered a competition which would lend the same feel should she win. With the help of the community, it is an achievable goal.

Recently, Jett entered the Taste of Home Magazine’s Carla Hall Favorite Chef competition with the top prize of $25,000 and to be featured in Taste of Home Magazine.

When asked what she would do with her winnings, Jett was humble and as always, thinking of the community she calls home.

“Immediately, I think I would buy groceries for my local food pantry- we serve more and more hungry family units every week. Then embellish the cooking module of a church camp – we have had cooking classes, would be great to outfit that with sets of measuring cups, spoons and aprons. We teach kitchen basics to children who only have microwave skill sets,” Jett said. “Oh! And a scholarship for a budding student of the food arts, here locally.”

Jett has a lengthy love affair with the culinary arts and can often be seen behind the scenes at a community function, wedding or church event creating delightful meals for whatever the occasion may be.

When she isn’t using her culinary skills to benefit the community, Jett may be found volunteering at the Mission of Hope, helping burnout victims through her service to the American Red Cross, being the hands and feet of Jesus through her service as a board member for Comfort Keepers Ministry, delivering food or other items to those in need or just lending a moment of her time to comfort someone having a rough day.

To support Jett in the competition, the process is very simple, one may vote by going to Jett’s Facebook page or by clicking the link below. Those who choose may go and cast a vote at no cost.

“The James Beard Foundation (JBF) is a 501(c)3 organization that celebrates and supports the people behind America’s food culture, while pushing for new standards in the restaurant industry to create a future where all have the opportunity to thrive. Established over 30 years ago, the Foundation has highlighted the centrality of food culture in our daily lives and is committed to supporting a resilient and flourishing industry that honors its diverse communities,” a representative of the Foundation said.

At press time, Jett was in fifth place out of more than 50 competitiors.
