An Izard County man is facing 10 felony charges after Izard County Deputies Randy Brassfield and DJ Tiernan responded to a call for service at an address in Pineville.

While at the residence, both deputies were invited inside the residence at which time they observed three firearms displayed on a hanging-rack on the wall.

It was discovered, one of the occupants, 59-year-old Jay Massey, was a convicted felon and not legally allowed to possess firearms.

Massey was taken into custody at which time Massey’s wife told authorities there were other firearms inside the home and turned the firearms over to deputies.

In total, 11 firearms were seized, one of which was a muzzleloader.

During a post-Miranda interview, Massey stated he was aware he was a convicted felon and had numerous firearms in his home, however; Massey stated he was told he could be in possession of firearms.

Massey gave the name of the individual who had advised him that the law on felons possessing firearms was a “gray-area” and stated he had been told it was “okay”.

Investigators explained the law and statute to Massey who, after becoming educated on the matter, agreed with authorities it was clear in the statue it was not a “gray-area”.

As a result, Massey faces 10 counts of possession of firearms by certain persons, a class D felony.

Bond for Massey was set at $20,000.
