We’ve got some important talkin’ to do about this new COVID strain everyone’s buzzing about—the FLiRT variant. Let me fill you in on what this new variant is all about and how you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe.
FLiRT is the latest COVID-19 variant that’s been making waves. It’s a part of the Omicron family, specifically evolved from a subvariant known as JN.1.11.1(Yale Medicine) (Mayo Clinic News Network). This little rascal has a few changes in its spike protein, making it more sneaky at evading our immune defenses. But remember, we’ve got our own tricks to stay ahead.
Just like its cousins, the FLiRT variant brings on the familiar symptoms:
Sore throat
Body aches
Cough
Runny nose
Shortness of breath, especially in folks who haven’t been vaccinated or got infected a long time ago.
Keep an eye out for these signs, and make sure to get tested if you’re feeling under the weather.
Now, let’s talk about keeping ourselves safe. Here are some tried-and-true ways to avoid spreading or catching the FLiRT variant:
● Although folks have differing opinions on both sides of the fence, gettin’ vaccinated is your best defense. Make sure you and your family are up to date with the latest COVID vaccines, especially the new ones coming out this fall.
● Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
● Wear a mask in crowded places, especially indoors. This helps reduce the spread of respiratory droplets that carry the virus.
● Keep a safe distance from others, especially in crowded or enclosed spaces. This can help reduce your risk of exposure.
● Increase airflow in your home by opening windows and using fans. Good ventilation can help disperse virus particles in the air.

● Keep up with local health advisories and COVID-19 transmission levels in your area. Knowledge is power, and staying informed can help you make the best decisions for your health.
● If you start feeling symptoms or think you’ve been exposed to someone with COVID-19, get tested. Early detection can help you manage the illness better and prevent spreading it to others.
● Eat well, get plenty of rest, and stay active. A healthy body is better equipped to fight off infections.
Remember, it’s all about being smart and staying one step ahead. We’ve handled tough times before, and we’ll handle this one, too. Keep your spirits high, look out for one another, and don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.
