Ocean Prey by John Sandford reviewed by T. E. Hill
John Sandford has written a million books. OK, not quite that many, and not as many as some, Patterson comes to mind, but a lot of books. His most well liked character, Lucas Davenport, has been in many of Sandford’s books, but is starting to get well used. He began as a cop on a beat and his career has grown with each new book through city, state, and federal police forces, always taking the hard cases. He has gotten married, had children, and watched them grow up. He has taken younger cops under his wing and showed them the ropes. I wonder how much longer he can last.
In the latest book, Ocean Prey, Davenport works with several of his younger associates to solve the murders of three federal officers during a drug drop in south Florida. His primary help is from Virgil Flowers, another Sandford character with his own series of books. Together, Lucas and Virgil make a great team.
I have read almost all of the Davenport and Flowers novels and enjoyed them all. Sandford keeps the action going while making me laugh and yet shows the serious side of law enforcement and the human side of his characters. Ocean Prey may not be great literature but it sure is fun to read.
