The first ever Stripes vs. Blues Softball Tournament, hosted by the Sharp County Sheriff’s Foundation will be held Saturday, May 3 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Ash Flat Ballpark.
According to Cassie Wilson, Peer Recovery Support Specialist for Sharp County, the tournament is a way to promote unity between first responders and recovery advocates.
“The goal is to promote unity among first responders and individuals in recovery, including some who were formerly incarcerated. But it’s important not to get caught up in labels. At the core, we’re all people, and many of us are working toward the same goals: healing, growth, and community well-being. This event provides a unique space where law enforcement and those in recovery can stand side by side—not as opposites, but as teammates and allies,” Wilson said. “That dynamic, while it might seem unexpected to some, is actually incredibly powerful. It’s about mutual respect, shared stories, and breaking down stereotypes. It’s refreshing for law enforcement to see the progress people have made, and it’s just as important for those in recovery to see officers supporting and encouraging their journey. Events like this help bridge the gap, challenge stigma, and demonstrate that real, lasting change is possible—especially when the community comes together with compassion and understanding.”
Wilson said the idea for the tournament came following a brainstorming session and a joint interest in fostering support for both the foundation and the specialists.
“It was born out of a brainstorming session focused on fundraising efforts for the Sharp County Sheriff’s Foundation. As a Peer Recovery Support Specialist, I felt it was important to create an event that not only raised funds but also fostered meaningful community collaboration—particularly between the recovery community and local law enforcement,” Wilson said. “We wanted something that brought people together in a positive, engaging way, and a tournament felt like the perfect fit to break down barriers and build relationships.”
The tournament will be an all day affair with 10 teams participating and a double elimination, giving the public a wide opportunity to come and support the teams and their mission.
“The recovery community relies heavily on support from all directions—community members, law enforcement, and local organizations. People need to know they’re not alone, and that they are supported. In the same way, the community needs to see that recovery works,” Wilson said. “Recovery advocacy means being a voice for hope and change. It’s about raising awareness, building support networks, and connecting people to life-saving resources. It’s helping individuals reclaim their lives and families rebuild. It’s standing up for something we know works.”
The funds raised through the concession stand benefit the Sheriff’s Foundation which creates scholarships, enables equipment purchases and helps provide resources for the peer recovery specialists and their clients.
“Attendees can expect great competition, a fun and friendly atmosphere, and plenty of delicious food. A major portion of the fundraising will come from the concession stand, which will feature barbecue plates and a variety of other food and drink options. Come hungry, and expect to laugh,” Wilson said. “The Sharp County Sheriff’s Foundation exists to support the Sheriff’s Department with essential needs such as equipment upgrades, advanced training opportunities, and even scholarships for employees and their families. Events like this tournament help the Foundation fulfill that mission while strengthening ties with the broader community.”
The community is invited and encouraged to attend. There is no entry fee, concessions will be available.
