Jon Smith will be presenting a program on creating raised beds Monday, May 1, 2023, at 10 a.m. in the Horseshoe Bend Library.

If you live in Izard County, then you know that it can often difficult to dig a hole to plant a tree or shrub due to all the rocks in our soil. Some gardeners prefer above-ground, raised garden beds. Jon Smith, a six-year veteran Baxter County Master Gardener, has researched two no-dig methods for planting.

Hugelkultur translates roughly from German as “hill culture”, in which logs, organic matter, and soil are built into a small hill and then planted. Jon’s other interest is wicking beds in which an irrigated raised bed system is watered from within. Interestingly, Jon built table-top size, three dimensional models of both gardening methods. He also offers a hand-out outlining his findings.

Jon Smith will discuss Hugelkultur and Wicking Beds on Monday, May 1 at Horseshoe Bend Library on Club Road at 10 a.m. This meeting is sponsored by Izard County Master Gardeners and open to the public. Sign-in will begin at 9:30 a.m.; light refreshments will be served. There will be ample time after the presentation for questions and discussion.
