They may be a nuisance at times, but raccoons play a vital role amongst the other fur bearers. They are the scavengers of the woods. Although they will seek out live meals such as eggs/grubs and other insects, they prefer not to work very hard for their food.

The bacteria they carry in their mouths is very harmful to other mammals. I once witnessed a hound dog get bite by a raccoon and the dog was paralyzed for three months.

They are nocturnal animals but will come out during the day when they are trying to find food for their young or they are in search of a mate. The old claim that if you see one out in the day light, it must have rabies, simply isn’t true.

This pair of raccoon kits was just having a ball in early August after a rain. For ISO 25,600, these turned out very good.
