A small group of protesters gathered at the Sharp County Courthouse Monday, June 23, to exercise their constitutional right to a peaceful protest.
Although many protesters did not want to go on record, their signage served as strong voice and stated their reasons for organizing and attending the protest.
Protesters voiced concerns regarding alleged corruption in county leadership in Sharp County.
Although in general agreement, the protesters held signs demanding the “death penalty for pedophiles”, “Blocking the property of persons involved in human rights abuse or corruption (citing the 2017 Executive Order 13818)” and calling for the “recall (of County Judge) Mark Counts” and Sheriff Shane Russell.
Recent decisions by the judicial system regarding local cases such as that of Jessie Tonkinson and former Police Chief Scott Rose, have raised concerns for some of the protesters.
Concerns included varying bond amounts, the holding of some citizens and the release of others.
Sharp County Sheriff Shane Russell it was a peaceful event.
“I am unsure of the exact numbers. There was minimal turnout, but it was a very peaceful protest thankfully. We appreciate everyone that exercises their constitutional rights and does it in a peaceful, respectful manner,” Russell said.”
Russell also said although he does not control bond amounts, anyone with concerns about the actions of the sheriff’s office is welcome to contact him and visit with him directly.
