A Stone County man is facing charges following an investigation into a shooting in the Luber area of Stone County Aug. 31.
According to Stone County Sheriff Brandon Long, at approximately 5 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a report of an individual who had been shot.
Deputies learned the victim had been shot with a small caliber weapon and sustained non-life threatning injuries, but was still flown from the scene to a hospital in Little Rock for treatment.
Authorities spoke with witnesses and the shooter, 60-year-old Steven Alan Gill of Luber.
On Sept. 1, although the investigation is ongoing enough evidence was gathered to arrest and charge Gill with two counts of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a minor.
“Shortly after the shooting deputies detained Gill for questioning. As the investigation continued well into the night and early morning hours, detectives found that the evidence collected was conflicting with Gills’ statements leading to his arrest,” Long said. “Detectives have worked tirelessly all weekend, and this investigation is still ongoing. Charges may be increased, changed, or additional charges added pending the conclusion of the investigation and review of the case by the prosecuting attorney. All final charges are filed by the prosecutor’s office, and all bonds are set by a judge. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
In a social media post, Long issued a statement reminding residents that threats would not be tolerated.

“As your Sheriff, I want to remind you all that this incident is upsetting, but making threats of harm is not the answer. Your Sheriff’s Office is working diligently to ensure that justice is served. We will not tolerate threats of harm to any person. We will protect and serve all our citizens equally. Pray for the victims and the families involved in this case and for our county,” Long said.
