According to North Arkansas Electric Cooperative more than 25,000 members are without electricity as of 7:50 a.m. Jan. 25.

“We still are assessing damage. We have not found any broken poles yet. Most damage is from lines sagging under snow’s weight and trees in the lines. Restoration efforts likely will continue into the weekend. We cannot provide estimated restoration for individual outages at this time. Additional crews are heading our way,” a representative of the company said.

The outage follows a strong storm system which moved into Arkansas and Missouri Tuesday afternoon dumping several inches of heavy, wet snow across the area.

According to Highland resident William Kaelber who monitored the snowfall, in the first few hours, snow fell at a rate of 1.75 inches per hour.

Upwards of 60 motor vehicle accidents were reported in the Tri-county area by authorities in Izard, Sharp and Fulton Counties.
