Amid one of the worst droughts in years, departments responded to a report of a fire at the Cherokee Village Elementary School which is undergoing much needed renovations.
According to Highland Fire Chief Myles Clem, the Highland and Cherokee Village Fire Departments responded to a report of a fire at Cherokee Village Elementary just after 4:30 p.m. July 15.
When the departments arrived on scene, debris at the rear of the school had caught fire at the entrance to the kitchen.
“They’ve been working on the building and we’re cutting metal yesterday. There was a little bit of smoldering and it caught debris on fire,” Clem said.
The departments were able to extinguish the flames and there is no interior damage reported.
Clem stated the portion of the structure which caught fire is slated for demolition as is.
