Despite the first day of December bringing varying forms of winter precipitation, it will not likely be the pattern for the month.
According to Jeff Hood with the National Weather Service, the last date precipitation fell in measure was more than a century ago.
“This isn’t the first year it has snowed or given us frozen precipitation early in the year. We have had deer hunters submit pictures and call in as early as late November in the past,” Hood said.” The last recorded date of snow on December the first however was in 1903 when one and a half inches fell.”
Hood said it is an infrequent occurrence and similarly to spring temperatures fluctuating in The Natural State during December.
There is good news for those who dislike the cold, but potentially bad news for those hoping for a white Christmas.
“For December the monthly outlook is underwhelming because, there are equal chances for above or below average temperatures. There is a chance we will be below normal initially,” Hood said. “For the first part of the month we’ll see below normal temperatures but for the last part of the month we will see above average. What we have experienced today. The confidence for the first half of the month we’ll be on the cool side but for the last half we’ll be on the warmer side.”
