After holding several successful fundraising events, the Copper Feather Dart League is forming a new non-profit known as the Copper Feather Leagues.

According to Billie Suiters, a member of the league, additional projects are underway and the community is invited to come and be part of helping their neighbor.

“When we first started there were about 20 people who got together and wanted to raise money for the community. We all play darts together. So we decided to form an organization within ourselves and we’ve filed our corporation paperwork for a 501-c-3 and we are just a bunch of people who want to help our community in need,” Suiters said.

Suiters said there are currently two projects taking place, collecting food to be given to the Mission of Hope and to fill blessing boxes and a second, creating and filling christmas stockings to be given to area children.

“We’re doing 100 stockings that are all hand sewn and we’re asking people in the communit ywho don’t have the means for Christmas, if they’d like one of these for our child to contact us and we will put them on the list,” Suiters said. “We decided to do stockings because many organizations do Christmas baskets and we thought if we made Christmas stockings, we could put toiletry itemts and other things that kids don’t get at Christmas. We’ll also put gift cards, candy and other things like that in them.”

The deadline to sign up for a stocking is Dec. 8 and Suiters said any remaining stockings will be given to area senior citizens.

As the Copper Feather Leagues continue their efforts to support the community, Suiters said upcoming events will include a fundraiser next year to benefit the Cherokee Village Animal Control, quilts to be given to veterans in area senior centers as memorail day approaches and a large community easter egg hunt.

When asked how the community can become involved in projects, Suiters said one way is to come and participate with the Dart League.

“At the Copper Feather every Monday night when we play darts at 6 p.m., we’re getting $25 a week toaward our fund. It is a $7 fee to play and one dollar out of that goes into our bank account for any of the fundraisers we have. So, when you come and play darts you’re contributing. Anyone 21 and older can come. There is no membership requirement. If you’d like to come join in the fun and help the community while you’re doing it, we welcome you,” Suiters said. “If you see somewhere in the commuinty that needs help, please let us know and we will vote on it and come up with a fundraiser.”
