Changes are coming to travel in the natural state after the announcement of a designation change for Highway 67 south of Walnut Ridge toward Newport and Little Rock.
As of Nov. 7, the roadway has been designated as Interstate 57 and will soon run from Little Rock to Walnut Ridge and connect a 400 mile north-south corridor from Chicago to just south of Sikeston Missouri.
The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) will receive $91 million dollars in federal funding for the project to take on the last 42 miles of road work.
“The Future I-57 corridor is critical for commerce in Arkansas and will increase mobility between the south central United States and the Midwest,” said Alec Farmer, Chairman of the Arkansas Highway Commission. “This route also will provide a better connection to an existing and underutilized interstate bridge across the Mississippi River.”
According to ARDOT, the first phase of construction along this alignment will build a bypass around the City of Corning. Construction of this segment is currently expected to begin in 2025.
Groundbreaking for the project will be held later this week.
