A man with a lengthy criminal history has been arrested in Sharp County and charged with rape, a class Y felony.
On Sept. 2, 34-year-old Franklin Carothers of Smithville was booked into the Sharp County Detention Center.
On May 17 of this year, charges of rape – forcible compulsion with an enhancement penalty for being a habitual offender were filed along with a warrant for Carothers arrest.
The charges stem from an incident on or about Feb. 6 when “the said defendant in the third district of the first division of Sharp County, did unlawfully and feloniously on or about Feb. 6, 2024, a person commits rape if he or she engages in sexual intercourse or deviate sexual activity with another person by forcible compulsion,” the records said.
The enhancement penalty comes as a result of Carothers having previously been convicted or found guilty of four or more felonies.
Bond for Carothers has been set at $150,000.
