The Arkansas Pie Festival, slated for April 29 will be here before you know it and so will the deadline for the Arkansas Pie Day 5k race.

According to race chair Rob Smith, he expects participation for the second annual to surpass the one hundred racers who participated last year.

“We’re getting steady start. We’ve contacted the Highland High School Track Team, and that usually pushes the numbers up quite a bit. We’re looking for between 100 and 150 participants this year,” Smith said.

Sign up for the race is $35 and includes entry to the festival and Smith said the race is unlike any other in the state.

“This is one of the most beautiful races I have ever seen in all of my running days. You get to run through the streets of Cherokee Village. You get to run past Lake Cherokee, Lake Thunderbird, you’re going over the Sequoya Dam between Lake Cherokee and Sequoya Lake and coming back around lake Cherokee, over Southfork River back over to the finish line. You will never participate in another race in Arkansas that is as beautiful as this race,” Smith said. “This race will actually take you though Deer Run Trail. It is a little known trail here in Cherokee Village but it runs a long Southfork River and that’s not something you would see at all if you were just driving through Cherokee Village.”

Smith said those who signup for the Arkansas Pie Day 5k prior to April 21 will receive a goodie bag which contains a t-shirt and more.

“The morning of the race, April 29, racers will need to be here by 8 a.m., the race begins at 8:30 and we should be finished by 10 a.m. and then they can go and enjoy the other activities going on at the festival.,” Smith said.
